Sergeant Thompson performed duties related to the rescue and recovery work after the terrorist attack at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Sergeant Thompson was a first responder to the scene of the attack and worked the bucket brigades on the days following the attack. Sergeant Thompson died of lung cancer on March 9, 2008. Sergeant Thompson cancer was certified by the WTC health program to receive treatment benefits.
