Ambassador Spotlight: Chief Tom Weitzel (Ret.) – A Legacy of Mentorship and Advocacy

Ambassador
Tom Weitzel

Tom Weitzel is a retired Chief of Police from Riverside, Illinois, with an esteemed career in law enforcement spanning 37 years—13 of which were spent as Chief. During his tenure, he held every rank within the department, including patrol officer, detective, sergeant, lieutenant, deputy chief, and ultimately, chief. Riverside, a small historic community located just west of Chicago, boasts a population of about 10,000 and holds the distinction of being one of the first planned communities in the United States, designed by the renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted.

One of the roles Tom valued most during his tenure as Chief was mentoring—not only his successor but every member of the department. This commitment to leadership did not halt with his retirement. As an Ambassador for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF), he continues to serve, advocate, and educate passionately.

Tom served for years on the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police Legislative Committee because he understood a fundamental truth: laws shape the realities of the law enforcement profession—from officer wellness and safety to training and funding. Even in retirement, he actively travels to Springfield, often at his own expense, to speak directly with lawmakers about issues impacting law enforcement.

Many legislators are unfamiliar with the NLEOMF or the vital work it accomplishes. While they may recognize the Museum, many have yet to hear about the Fund and how it supports officers, especially in their most challenging moments. When Tom explains the mission to assist current and retired law enforcement officers and the families of those killed in the line of duty, they listen. Every single time.

Tom proudly flies the American flag alongside the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund flag on the 20-foot pole in front of his home. This simple act of visibility can spark powerful conversations. Recently, a local legislator and his wife stopped by after seeing the Memorial Fund flag. The legislator inquired about what it represented—and after hearing the mission, he thanked Tom and committed himself to helping raise awareness among his colleagues.

To his fellow NLEOMF Ambassadors across the country, Tom emphasizes the power of small gestures. Whether it’s flying the flag, sharing the mission at a town meeting, or simply speaking up in the community—individual voices matter. Together, Ambassadors can ensure that more people, including elected leaders, understand and support this honorable profession.

Policing is one of the most noble callings in America. Tom is proud to continue serving in this role and encourages others to do the same.
