In 2015, Ohio Department of Public Safety banded together with the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police, the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, and the Buckeye State Sheriff’s Association in an effort to train every department in Ohio on the Below 100 tenets of safety. Together, the group produced their own traffic safety video featuring various law enforcement officers from Ohio who had experienced a crash or other safety related incident that they lived to tell about.

With the State Police taking the lead, municipal officers, sheriff’s deputies and state troopers collaborated to conduct the trainings together at no cost. Through Mutual Aid Agreements, other agencies would come to the jurisdiction where the training was being held to cover the assignments of officers that were on leave attending the training. With assistance from Nationwide insurance and the Ohio Traffic Safety Office, funding was provided for instructors to travel outside their jurisdictions to teach the program. More than 2,500 officers have received the training.

While there was no immediate data to show how effective the training has been, it should also be noted that the state of Ohio has not had a fatal traffic related law enforcement fatality since it began.
