The Unlikely Spy

The FBI’s Most Successful 20th Century Operation

The National Law Enforcement Museum’s newest online exhibit, The Unlikely Spy: The FBI’s Most Successful 20th Century Operation, tells a little-known story that deserves a big spotlight. Deep within the museum’s archives are the papers of Morris Childs, an American communist party member turned FBI informant who provided a window into Soviet politics for more than 20 years. This new exhibit describes Childs’ years of service to the FBI, from rising through the ranks of the Communist Party of the United States, to dining with the leaders of China and the USSR, to smuggling secrets out of Moscow under his own jacket. Never-before-seen letters and photographs from the museum’s collection bring new perspective to this harrowing story of international espionage and American courage.
