On October 30, 2020, Senior Police Officer Abney and his partner were stopped at an intersection when a passerby opened fire on them in an unprovoked attack. Officer Abney was shot in the head and lost sight in his left eye and also the bullet remained lodged in his skull. Officer Abney succumbed to complications of his gunshot wound on April 9, 2023. His partner sustained non-life threatening injuries.
