On February 28, 1990, Detective Backherms was shot in the abdomen when three suspects attempted to rob him while undercover. Detective Backherms was transported to the hospital, underwent surgery twice and was released from the hospital two months later in April. The suspects were convicted of various offenses and given sentences ranging from 7-15 years in prison. Detective Backherms died on April 7, 2019 due to complications of the gunshot wound. Detective Backherms was the recipient of the department Combat Star award.
