Superintendent Bennett was assigned to assist with the search and recovery efforts at Ground Zero in New York City. Superintendent Bennett died of lung cancer on August 15, 2017. The diagnosed illness is on the NIOSH/WTC Health Program list of covered conditions. The February 2017, date of diagnosis is within the established minimum latency period of 4 years established by NIOSH for lung cancer.
