Deputy Sheriff Byrd was shot as he and a second deputy attempted to arrest a wanted criminal. Deputy Byrd died at the scene. Three suspects were fatally shot in an exchange of gunfire with deputies. A fourth suspect was lynched days later by an angry mob.
