Marshal Carter was attacked when he attempted to arrest three men who he caught in the act of drilling into a bank vault. Marshal Carter was struck over the head repeatedly with an iron crowbar and his body was left outside the bank door. Footprints from Marshal Carter’s body led to the house of the suspect who was arrested, along with his accomplices, and taken into custody. A week later, an angry mob of over 200 people, forcibly removed the prisoners from the jail and lynched them.
