Marshal Hansen was shot while conducting an investigation regarding a blackmailing attempt by the notorious Whitney gang of desperadoes. As Marshal Hansen approached the residence to conduct a stakeout, he saw a suspicious man and ordered him to halt. The man responded with gunfire. Marshal Hansen was wounded and his horse was killed. Marshal Hansen was transported into town, placed under a doctor’s care and died several hours later. His assailant was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 15-20 years in prison.
