On June 13, 1921, Sergeant Houston and Captain Harry Phoenix were shot by two suspects they attempted to question. Captain Phoenix died at the scene. Sergeant Houston suffered a gunshot wound to the chest. Although Captain Houston continued on the job, he never recovered from the wound to his lung and was in and out of the hospital over the next several years. In 1927, he developed pneumonia and influenza and died on October 4, 1927.
