Detective Zadroga responded to the terrorist attack at the World Trade Center and was inside one of the towers when it collapsed but he escaped. Detective Zadroga worked for more than 470 hours at Ground Zero. Detective Zadroga was diagnosed with black lung disease and mercury on the brain. Detective Zadroga died of a respiratory disease on January 17, 2005.
