On May 23, 2023, Corporal Lahera was struck by a vehicle while working a traffic detail at a local high school. Corporal Lahera was transported to a hospital with a traumatic brain and spinal cord injury, along with other internal injuries. He was later moved to a rehabilitation facility, where he passed away on September 11, 2025 from complications of quadriplegia and blunt force head and neck trauma.
