On June 2, 1879, Constable Leininger accompanied the tax collector and an auctioneer to the residence of a suspect in Lebanon County who had failed to pay his taxes and for furniture. As the men arrived at the residence and stepped into the yard, the suspect began shooting. Constable Leininger and the tax collector were shot. The suspect then died by suicide. Constable Leininger died of his injuries two days later on June 4th.
