On November 16, 1901, Marshal Lodine was shot as he and a posse attempted to arrest a gang of bank robbers. Marshal Lodine died of his injuries one week later on November 23, 1901. One suspect was killed in an exchange of gunfire with the posse. Two suspects were convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.
