Staff Sergeant Self, of the 314th Security Forces Squadron, Little Rock AFB, Arkansas, was killed when his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device (IED) as he led his team on a joint police patrol in Baghdad, Iraq with the local police. Three other officers were wounded but survived their injuries. Staff Sergeant Self, as a member of the Police Transition Team, was responsible for recruiting, training and equipping members of the Iraqi police force.
