Environmental Consciousness and Sustainability

Environmental Responsibility

The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) is an environmentally conscious organization committed to preserving the legacy of American law enforcement while remaining mindful of our responsibility to the world around us. We believe that honoring the fallen, telling the story of American law enforcement, and making it safer for those who serve requires not only care for our history and mission, but thoughtful consideration of the environment in which that story lives.

As stewards of a national memorial and museum in the heart of our nation’s capital, NLEOMF is committed to maintaining a museum that is environmentally conscious and a memorial that remains pristine for generations to come. Through sustainable efforts, responsible operations, and long-term planning, we work to ensure that these spaces endure, allowing the memory of law enforcement to be preserved, experienced, and honored well into the future.

Leed Silver-Certified Facility

A cornerstone of our environmental commitment is our LEED Silver–certification, recognized under the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED for New Construction rating system. This certification reflects verified performance above baseline building standards and confirms our dedication to sustainable design, construction, and long-term operations.

LEED Certification

The National Law Enforcement Museum has achieved LEED Silver Certification under the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED for New Construction rating system. This designation reflects verified performance across key sustainability categories, including site planning, energy and water efficiency, materials selection, indoor environmental quality, and operational practices.

From the earliest planning stages, our Museum was designed to reduce energy consumption and operate efficiently over the long term. High-efficiency heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, an enhanced building envelope, and reduced lighting power density work together to minimize energy use while supporting the unique needs of a public Memorial and Museum.

Water conservation is a key component of the facility’s sustainability strategy. Plumbing fixtures and water-saving technologies significantly reduce potable water use, while landscaping choices minimize irrigation demand and help conserve local water resources.

Environmental responsibility was further prioritized throughout construction through thoughtful materials selection and waste management. A significant portion of construction waste was diverted from landfills through recycling and material recovery programs, and building materials were chosen to include recycled content, regional sourcing, and certified wood products.

Indoor environmental quality was central to the building’s design, especially as our Museum is underground. It is vital to us that the Museum and surrounding spaces are healthy, comfortable, and welcoming. Increased ventilation, the use of low-emitting materials, and indoor air quality testing prior to occupancy help maintain clean indoor air and support the well-being of visitors, staff, and volunteers.

Finally, the facility’s transit-oriented location supports access to public transportation and reduces reliance on single-occupancy vehicles, helping lower transportation-related emissions while improving accessibility.

About the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund

Established in 1984, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund is a nonprofit organization dedicated to honoring the fallen, telling the story of American law enforcement, and making it safer for those who serve. The first pillar of this mission, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C., honors the names of all the 24,775 officers who have died in the line of duty to date throughout U.S. history. Additionally, NLEOMF maintains and publishes comprehensive details on the circumstances surrounding official line-of-duty deaths. The Officer Safety and Wellness pillar uses that data, coupled with best-practice program models, to produce programming directed at solutions to improve survivability and enhance wellness. NLEOMF’s third pillar, the National Law Enforcement Museum (LawEnforcementMuseum.org) is committed to preserving the history of American law enforcement and sharing the experiences of service and sacrifice for generations to come.
