Sunday, May 10 – Saturday, May 16, 2020
The crisis that our nation and the world is currently facing may have resulted in the cancellation of public gatherings in Washington, DC, during National Police Week 2020, but the National Law Enforcement Memorial and Museum continued to recognize National Police Week as the dedicated time on the calendar to honor, remember, and celebrate American Law Enforcement.
Most importantly, the crisis did not deter us from honoring the 307 fallen heroes who have just been memorialized on the walls of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. On Wednesday, May 13, 2020, at 8:00pm Eastern, we marched forward in solidarity with a virtual Candlelight Vigil and the reading of the names that was watched from all over the nation.

What is National Police Week?
In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.
National Police Week is a collaborative effort of many organizations dedicated to honoring America’s law enforcement community. The principal organizers of National Police Week include:
- National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF), which produces the annual Candlelight Vigil.

- Fraternal Order of Police/Fraternal Order of Police Auxiliary (FOP/FOPA), which organize the Peace Officers Memorial Day Service at the U.S. Capitol.
