Trooper Gerald Ellis was killed in an automobile crash while on patrol. Trooper Ellis’s patrol vehicle was struck head-on by a driver traveling in the wrong direction. Trooper Ellis was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. Trooper Ellis is the 12th law enforcement officer to be killed in a traffic-related incident this year and the fourth officer fatality from the state of Illinois in 2019.
