Police Officer Charlie Cortez drowned after the boat he was in capsized when a large rogue wave struck the vessel during the rescue of another vessel. Officer Cortez and another officer were thrown overboard. The other officer was later rescued and transported to the hospital for treatment. Officer Cortez is the third officer fatality from a Tribal Agency in 2020.
