Correctional Officer Robert McFarland was assaulted and beaten to death, along with a nurse, by two inmates at the Anamosa State Penitentiary in the state of Iowa. The two inmates were attempting to escape and eventually were subdued. Correctional Officer McFarland is the first officer fatality from the state of Iowa in 2021.
