On December 18, 2017, Trooper Joseph Gallagher was struck by a distracted driver and seriously injured causing a traumatic brain injury as he assisted another motorist. On March 26, 2021, Trooper Gallagher succumbed to injuries sustained 3 years earlier. Trooper Gallagher is the 18th law enforcement officer to be killed in a traffic-related incident and the second officer fatality from the state of New York in 2021.
