Washington, DC—The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund has named Captain Tracie Meidl, of the Spokane (WA) Police Department, as the recipient of its Officer of the Month Award for October 2018.
Captain Meidl has served the citizens of Spokane, Washington, well for more than 25 years. Her passion and commitment to the law enforcement profession, and to the community, is clear throughout her career.
Captain Meidl began her law enforcement career as a Spokane Police Explorer in 1989, a program that gives young adults the opportunity to explore a career in law enforcement by working with local agencies. She became a full-time law enforcement officer in 1993. Since then, she has held almost every position within the department and currently serves as a captain in Spokane’s South Precinct.
Throughout her career, Captain Meidl was a K-9 officer, a member of the Peer Assistance Team that helps fellow officers who have been involved in critical incidents, and spent time as the department’s Public Information Officer. During her time in the Community, Youth and Intervention Services division, she expanded the Spokane Police Activities League, engaging more than 300 youths each summer. Captain Meidl designed a restorative justice program for Spokane Public Schools called ‘Restore Our Kids,’ providing an afterschool program for students to attend who would otherwise be suspended from school.
Captain Meidl was also instrumental in the formation of the Spokane Faith Alliance, building a relationship with community leaders. Recently, she helped preview Fight Crime: Invest in Kids Washington, which supports increased access to high-quality preschool, home visiting, and expanded learning opportunities.
While Captain Meidl has accumulated many law enforcement awards and certificates, her commitment to her community stands out through her volunteer work. She was a member of her Church Hospitality Team from 2004 to 2013 and currently serves on the Spokane Housing Ventures Board. She is also a YWCA board member.
“To be a good law enforcement officer, you need a dedication to service and your community,” Memorial Fund Chief Executive Officer Craig W. Floyd said. “Captain Meidl isn’t just a good officer, her many commitments show she’s a great one. These efforts do not go unnoticed, and it’s my honor to present her with the Memorial Fund’s Officer of the Month Award for October 2018.”

The Memorial Fund’s Officer of the Month Award Program began in 1996 and recognizes federal, state, and local officers who distinguish themselves through exemplary law enforcement service and devotion to duty.
Captain Tracie Meidl, along with the other Officer of the Month Award recipients for 2018, will be honored at a special awards ceremony in Washington, DC, in 2019.
