Hi, my name is Chris Ahr. I joined the Drug Enforcement Administration in 2005 when I was 23 years old because I wanted to continue a family tradition of law enforcement service and build a career in federal criminal investigations.
I come from a multi-generational law enforcement family. My father was one of the first Special Agents of the DEA, and his career had a major influence on my decision to pursue federal service. My grandfather and several of my uncles also served in local law enforcement. Growing up around that environment shaped my understanding of duty, accountability, and public service, and ultimately set the foundation for my career.
I began my federal law enforcement career as a Diversion Investigator in the San Antonio District Office, working illicit online pharmaceutical trafficking cases, physician prescription fraud, and diversion of precursor chemicals used in methamphetamine production. From the beginning, I was drawn to complex investigations that required persistence, analytical thinking, and collaboration across agencies.
I earned a BA in Theatre Arts from Texas A&M University and a MS in Justice Policy from the University of Texas at San Antonio.
I served as a Special Agent with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. I completed assignments in Florida, Japan, Hawaii, and Texas, working a broad range of criminal and national security investigations including family violence, sexual assault, death investigations, counterterrorism, counterintelligence, protective operations, and major fraud. I served as a Major Case Response Team leader and was assigned to the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.
During my NCIS career, I deployed globally in support of maritime security operations with Combined Task Force 151, serving as the senior law enforcement advisor aboard USS MASON DDG 87. I led Visit Board Search and Seizure operations and participated in maritime interdictions and hostage rescue missions, including the SY QUEST and MV NASRI incidents in the Gulf of Aden. I also served as a Personal Security Advisor to the Commander of Combined Joint Task Force Horn of Africa in Djibouti and to the Commander of the U.S. Seventh Fleet in Yokosuka Japan. I deployed to Camp Leatherneck in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and served as the first responder and case agent for the 2020 terrorist attack at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi Texas.
Following my NCIS service, I served as a Special Agent with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Office of Law Enforcement, where I enforced federal environmental laws and protected marine resources across all U.S. ocean waters, more than 95,000 miles of coastline, 14 National Marine Sanctuaries, and five Marine National Monuments. My work supported both domestic enforcement priorities and international conservation treaty obligations.
I currently serve as a Special Agent with the Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General in Houston Texas, where I conduct complex federal investigations involving fraud, corruption, abuse, and misconduct affecting DHS programs, personnel, and operations.
One thing that surprised me about being a federal criminal investigator is how broad and interconnected the mission becomes over time. What begins as a specific investigative role often expands into national security operations, international deployments, public corruption investigations, and oversight of major government programs.
I am sharing this because I want my community to understand that federal law enforcement is built on generations of service and mentorship. For many of us, it is not just a profession but a family legacy shaped by those who served before us.
I am honored to be remembered in this Museum because it represents not only my career, but also the legacy of service that shaped me and the people who dedicate their lives to protecting others, often without recognition.
