Being a Cop

Michael Mercorella

Michael Mercorella
Police Officer (Ret.), NYC Transit Police Department

My name is Mike Mercorella, I’m a retired Police Officer. In 1967, after being discharged from the US Air Force, I took the test for the NYC Transit Police. They hired me in 1968 and that was the start of my law enforcement career. The job had a lot of ups and downs in my 15-year career. I’ve seen many things over those years that weigh heavy in my heart and my dreams many nights. The job seems to be thankless, but I loved it and I would do again in a New York second. It was an honor to serve and protect. In those 15 years, I was involved in three shootings and wounded in the line of duty, which ended my career. I have been awarded the Combat Cross, Exceptional Duty Medal, Distinguished Duty, four Honorable Mention Bars and one Meritorious Duty Bar. I look back at my career with a feeling of pride and honor to have served. Now, my son Michael is following in my foot steps as a police officer in New York. I’m so proud of him, may God bless him keep him safe.
