Small Town Wisconsin Police Officer

Derick Kruger
Police Officer, Mayville (WI) Police Department

Ever since the age of 5, I wanted to be a police officer. As a kid, I could even imitate the sound of a police siren, which scared my parents on quite a few occasions while driving (Rightfully so and not so bright on my behalf). As I got older and into high school, I joined the Police Explorers program, a program for high school kids interested in law enforcement. After high school, I attended Fox Valley Technical College in Appleton, WI and got my Associate Degree in Police Science, as well as became “certifiable” as an officer in Wisconsin, set forth by WI DOJ Training & Standards. I have approximately 20 years of experience in the public safety fields and for a few agencies.

My true passion has always been and will always be in the law enforcement profession. Besides all my experience, I have a total of (3) Associate Degrees, (4) Certificates, a Technical Degree and studied abroad in Ireland. For me, to have served as a Police Officer, Deputy Sheriff, Dispatcher and Firefighter, it has given me a complete perspective on public safety.

My favorite part of the job is being involved with the community. National Night Out, Shop with the Cops and other community programs are my favorite. For me, being a Police Officer is not just about writing tickets or making arrests. It’s about being a public servant and help solve community problems/issues. Law enforcement is just as more important to be a preventative to crime, as it is to enforcing laws.

President Ronald Reagan said it best “evil is powerless, when the good are unafraid.” I have his quote in one of my shadow boxes as a reminder of why I wanted to be a police officer to begin with, along with a cross pendant. I want to thank you for hearing my story and who I am. As stated in 1 Chronicles 16:11, “seek out the Lord and his strength, seek His face always.”
