Sheriff Allen sustained a fatal wound to the chest in an automobile crash while on duty. Sheriff Allen, passenger, was en route back to Crane county from Winkler on business when their car collided with the rear of a vehicle loaded with scrap lumber. A piece of lumber crashed through the front windshield and pierced Sheriff Allen in the chest. Sheriff Allen was transported to the hospital where he died.
