Working Together to Improve Safety

Our partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is a long-standing relationship that is focused on improving the safety of police officers as they perform their duties on the nation’s roadways. By conducting in-depth analysis of fatal law enforcement incidents, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) provides NHTSA and the law enforcement community with vital information on how and where officers are dying as a result of traffic-related incidents.

The NLEOMF and NHTSA work together to educate law enforcement officials on the common types of fatal crashes and roadway incidents and offer strategies and guidance on how to mitigate them. This is accomplished by sharing the data and analysis across a wide array of platforms such as conferences, workshops, webinars, and distributed materials.

The NLEOMF provides critical insight into seat belt usage, single-vehicle crashes, motorcycle crashes and deaths involving officers being struck on the roadside. The NLEOMF produces informational videos in which officers who have survived serious crashes or roadside incidents share their personal stories that act as cautionary tales with solid recommendations on how to avoid or reduce the risk of such incidents.

The NLEOMF and NHTSA work together to reduce law enforcement involved crashes and to provide actionable recommendations to agencies so that they may better protect their officers and improve roadway safety.
