Police Officer Haynes was shot, with his own weapon, as he assisted the railroad police arrest hobos and tramps who were hitchhiking on the train. As Officer Haynes struggled with one of the suspects, the suspect gained control of the service weapon and fatally shot Officer Haynes in the abdomen. The suspect fled the scene and was not apprehended.
