On May 22, 1874, Deputy U.S. Marshal Hildreth was shot, in an exchange of gunfire, as he attempted to serve a warrant to a KKK suspect for arson in Coffee County, Tennessee. The suspect fled and was not apprehended. Deputy Hildreth died of his injuries three days later on May 25th.
