On May 11, 2023, Corporal Kelly was shot after responding to a suspicious person call. As Corporal Kelly and another officer arrived on scene, the suspect immediately opened fire striking the officer. The suspect fled and was shot and killed by responding deputies. Corporal Kelly succumbed to his gunshot wound on June 2, 2023.
