On August 13, 2022, Corporal McArdle attempted four protective orders in three locations in Annapolis, Odenton and Severn, MD, including one out of state order. The next day, shortly after beginning his shift at 7:00 am, Corporal McArdle was in the office preparing to serve domestic violence protective orders when he told communications that he was driving himself to a hospital as he was not feeling well. When Corporal McArdle arrived at the hospital, he suffered a fatal heart attack.
