On January 13, 2022, Assistant Chief Patterson was struck by a vehicle while directing traffic in front of an elementary school after school dismissal. Officer Patterson was transported to the hospital where he remained on life support so his organs could be donated on January 21, 2022. Officer Patterson was the Assistant Chief at Verona Police Department and was assigned to the Lee County School District as a School Resource Officer.
