On January 16, 1990, Patrolman Patterson was washing his car on a street near his home when he was accosted by a juvenile and two other suspects who demanded money. Patrolman Patterson was shot in the head and suffered a catastrophic injury. Patrolman Patterson, who was promoted to Detective in 2016, remained in a vegetative state until his death 33 years later on April 29, 2023.
