On April 3, 1984, Police Officer Sides responded to a trespassing call with a repeat offender. The suspect opened fire on the responding officers striking Officer Sides in the left temple and he broke his leg when he fell after being shot. Due to the extent of his injuries, Officer Sides medically retired a few months after the incident. Officer Sides lived with brain damage and succumbed to complications of the initial gunshot wound on August 14, 2023.
