In 2014, the Orange County California Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) launched a traffic safety campaign called “For Your Partners, For Your Family.” The campaign focused on seat belt usage, minimizing distracted driving, and speed appropriate for the situation. OCSO created a video featuring a deputy who had been in a crash while not wearing a seat belt and where unsafe speed also played a role. The office placed wrecked cruisers displaying the Campaign logo on them, at the entrance to every station.
The department also created video of a deputy as he receives a priority assignment, but before he reaches for the lights and siren switch’ the image of his daughter appears in the passenger seat and reminds him to wear his seat belt. The office also created posters, magnets, and stickers as a part of the campaign. Recent data collected revealed that collisions were down from 62 in the second quarter of 2015 to 38 in the third quarter of 2015, a 39% decrease. Additionally, the data showed that 100% of Deputies involved in collisions in the third quarter were wearing their seat belt.
